Friday Family Newsletter - May 27, 2022

Friday Family Newsletter - May 27, 2022

Dear MHS Families,

Today, as we celebrate all that we have accomplished thus far at MHS this school year, our celebrations cannot escape what is happening in the world. Today, we stand witness to the horrific killing of 19 elementary school children and 2 teachers in Uvalde, Texas. I would like to open this Friday’s communication with a link to Dr. Susan Enfield’s post regarding the Tragedy in Texas.

You may be asking the same question as I am: don’t school children have a right to be safe? Yes; and I wish I could send you all out with impenetrable armor. I wish I could say that all will be OK; that this will be the last time we mourn the lives of the innocent. But we must confront the realities of the world, and even in the face of apathy, hypocrisy, indifference, and pure evil, our vision, our work–does not change. I continue to have faith in what this community stands for, the work we are doing, and the change we can bring about in the world together. Thank you for being part of our community and for the many things you are doing to advance the educational world and the maritime industry as a whole.

Important Announcements:

We are announcing two staffing changes. I am pleased to announce that I have re-assigned our very own Ms. Mia Mlekarov as our new Maritime HS Career Connected Learning Specialist for the 22-23 school year and beyond. She will continue her current teaching role until the end of this school year (June 16th). Ms. Mia’s new role will entail developing our mentoring/internship program, supporting our collaboration work with community partnerships, as well as aiding students with post-secondary planning. I am excited for Mia to utilize her strengths in the future the work ahead!

We are also pleased to announce that Maritime High School has hired Beverly Pecoraro as our Humanities Generalist Position for the 22-23 school year and beyond. Beverly comes to us from one of our district partner choice programs, Big Picture. Beverly brings years of experience building strong relationships with students and families, working with project-based learning, finding and coordinating internships, community building, focusing on social-emotional learning, and engaging in interdisciplinary curriculum. She will continue her current placement teaching role until the end of this school year (June 16th). We are excited for Beverly to utilize her strengths in our collective future work ahead! Welcome aboard!
