Introducing the Waves!

Introducing the Waves!

Dear Maritime Community,

More than 50 students, staff, family members and community members participated in our mascot ThoughtExchange. Top contenders were the Rip Tides, Waves and the Tides. After thoughtful discussion with staff and a review of all the feedback, our staff finds that the Waves and what they symbolize best support the vision of our school. Waves also generated a lot of excitement among students.

The symbolism associated with waves fits Maritime High School well. Water connects all of us. Waves are full of energy and always moving—just like Maritime students. Waves can be calm and soothing and also represent power and strength.

Waves have the potential to travel across an entire ocean basin if unobstructed. This is our goal for Maritime students—to remove barriers so that they can travel and reach their educational and professional goals.

There is a great opportunity for related themes for student clubs or class names. We can see clubs forming called the Brain Waves, Rip Tides or Tsunamis. We hope our school mascot will offer inspiration for community and collaboration.

We also like the connection to the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in WWII. This was one of the first service branches for women in the military beyond nursing. These women were trailblazers in diversifying the U.S. armed forces, just as Maritime High School is a leader in diversifying the maritime workforce.

In the coming months, we will create opportunities for our community to weigh in on school colors. We will also be reforming our design committee this spring to launch work early this fall. If you are interested in participating, please let us know! This is a great opportunity to be part of Maritime High School's history.
